Transition to Peace and Democracy
In 2005 an historic peace agreement was signed between the Sudan Government and the Sudanese people’s Liberation Army, creating a separate Government of southern Sudan in the South and a Government of National Unity based in the North, for an interim period of six years.
The comprehensive peace agreement (CPA) required Sudan to do two things, both of which are extremely difficult to do:
One is to make transition from authoritarianism to democracy, scheduling mi- term national election in 2009, and the other is to prepare for a referendum on self –determination in the south in 2011. Doing these in parallel is an exceptionally challenging task for a country emerging from almost 50 years of civil war.
The programme aims to support Sudan’s transition a peaceful and democratic society, through the promotion, engagement and support of Sudanese civil society through:
- Initiating a Sudan – Sudan Dialogue.
- Supporting civil society’s role in democratic and transition processes.
- Supporting civil society’s role in conflict prevention, resolution and peace building in Kordofan.
